Overview

There seems to be a huge debate in this day and age over what can be considered art. With the rise of technology, different art forms never thought imaginable are now a click away. And with this new advancement we are pulling away from the standards of what is traditionally considered high art. How can a video game, which has objectives, rules, points, and outcomes, be art? Well video games are art because they contain narratives, graphics, animation, and music. These features would be considered artistic by most people’s standards. The games on the market now of days are so visually appealing and complex, it’s hard for me to believe that someone could look and not think that they are viewing art. But unlike other art forms, i.e, film, music, and paintings you are taking an active experience in the game. Instead of being an observer, and getting a reaction from just what you are witnessing, you become invested in the game and are only using the art form to “win” or succeed, and thus it has no other purpose. And although there is some validity in video games beginning different from other art forms, it still doesn’t mean that thArte fact that you are playing a game should take away from the experience. For example when I was younger I became obsessed with the video game, Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time. Not because it was a good game (even though it was) but because it was so stunningly beautiful, and interesting that I thought it was the best piece of art out there. I would just sit and watch my brother play for hours because I wanted to be a part of, and experience the world of Zelda.
